My Grandpa
It is tough in our fast and furious world where our attention is captivated by the latest electronics to take a moment and appreciate those closest to us, especially our own family members. Yesterday Bill Bagi passed away. He is my grandfather.
I look back on my times with him and relish in the memories. We went to Canada fishing where he taught me as a young boy the basics of the rod and reel. Each year that passed he taught me more and more about fishing through his patience and encouragement. As I write this I can still feel the sun warming my face from those sunsets on the lake. My Grandpa was my mentor.
He was also a Korean War veteran who fought in the famous battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He was a Soldier who did what his country asked of him even though the rewards or gratitude was minimal. I was so proud of his military service it was the influence which had me enter the Marine Corps. I wanted to feel firsthand the camaraderie which so moved me in his stories. My Grandpa was was my hero.
He had a work ethic that was second to none. He worked up until the day he saw God. He never complained and got along with everyone. He was non-judgmental and he was a friend to everyone who met him. My Grandpa was my icon.
Knowing he has now left me makes my heart yearn for just one last cast of my rod and reel with him. I want to hear one more military story where I could picture myself next to him and his war buddies. However, the last fish has been caught and the final story of heroism has been told. In my Grandpa's death, he has taken from me the hope of another moment with him but at the same time he has blessed me with appreciating every moment with my son, my family and my friends.
I will forever miss my Grandpa but God has truly smiled upon me when he made me the grandson of Bill Bagi.
Grandpa you will forever be loved and missed.
