I adored Shirley Werner. She was a unique combination of kindness and sweetness, coupled with a dry wit and an inability to suffer fools gladly. Her side eye was second to none. I met Shirley 49 years ago. I was a 24 year old secular Jewish kid from Brooklyn, and she was a devout Catholic mother of seven from North Ridgeville, Ohio. Two different planets. And she welcomed me into her family with total love and affection, and without hesitation. That was her trademark. She will be dearly missed.
