Fred H. Burns' Obituary
Fred H. Burns, age 87, of Elyria passed away Monday April 7, 2014 at the home of his daughter in Sullivan, following a 3 month illness.
He was born in Raymond, Arkansas. He had resided in Elyria since 1984, after moving from Cleveland.
Mr. Burns served in the US Navy during WW II on the USS Porterfield DD 682. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 8 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars.
He worked 30 years for GM Chevy Parma Plant retiring in 1985. He was a member of UAW Local 1005. He enjoyed gardening and was active with Island Road Freewill Baptist Church, where he volunteered as a Sunday School Teacher.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rose (nee Nelson); two sons, Nathan (Molly) of Elyria, Curtis (Jackie) Burns of North Ridgeville; two daughters, Marilyn (Vernon) Thompson of Sullivan, Cynthia (Don) Michaels of Painsville; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one great- great grandchild and one sister Christine (John) Manning of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred L. Burns, Effie Rimmer; son Richard; three infant children; three brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home 36625 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville, where services will be held 11 AM Friday. Rev. Ed Kennedy Sr. and Rev. Earl Coleman will co-officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. The VFW Post 9871 will conduct full military honors.
