Edmund Grochowski's Obituary
Edmund B. Grochowski, age 92, of North Ridgeville died Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at the Brecksville VA Hospital following a short illness.
He was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and grew up in Cleveland. He was a resident of North Ridgeville since 1956 moving from Lakewood.
He attended St. Stanilaus Catholic Church in Cleveland.
Mr. Grochowski was a toll collector at exit 9 of the Ohio Turnpike from 1955 until retiring in 1976. Prior to 1955, he had worked at the General Motors Cadillac Tank Plant in Cleveland for 5 years.
He served as a Corporal in the 15th Army Air Corp 464 Bomb Group 776 B-24 Squadron stationed in Italy during WWII. He received the European Theater Ribbon with 7 bronze stars, The American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and Distinguished Unit Citation with 1 Oak Cluster. While in Italy, he was able to see the Pope twice.
Mr. Grochowski was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and has been in the Knights of Columbus in Lakewood where he was a 3rd degree. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079, Elyria.
He enjoyed bowling, football and was an avid baseball fan his whole life. He was present for the last two games of the World Series in 1948 and the two home games of the 1954 World Series in Cleveland. Among many memorable baseball games, he was present when Earl Averil hit his 1st home run at his first at bat in the American League.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia on January 4, 1997, his parents, Barney and Lucy Grochowski, four brothers, Ted, Ben, Paul and Chester, for sisters, Sabine Grochowski, Josephine Buckley, Wanda Thompson and Helene Waldron.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9PM at the David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville where a prayer service will be held on Monday at 9:30AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00AM on Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church 35777 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville. Rev. Stephen Kaminski, Pastor will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
