Sylvester C. "Jim" Alten's Obituary
Sylvester, "Jim" Alten, age 86, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 after a long illness. Born in Avon, OH he lived almost his entire life there until moving recently to North Ridgeville. Jim worked as a safety engineer for the B.F. Goodrich Company for 46 years before retiring in 1992. Besides spending time with his family, you could find him reading, flower gardening, tinkering in the garage, or making pickles, cabbage rolls, and fudge in the kitchen. Up until last month, he was still attending his monthly Avon High School Class reunion lunches for the "Class of 1947". He enjoyed all the pets of his children, but he was most adoring of his beloved dog, Brandy.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Roberta (nee Wilson); children Teresa Alten of North Ridgeville, Kevin (Brenda) Alten of Bath, Debora (Kurt) Eckert of Sheffield Village, Brad (Karen) Alten of Columbia Station, Sandra (Harold) Maddock of Columbia Station, Melissa (Brent) Bartlett of Copley, Cheryn (Tom) Houston of Dublin and James Alten of Avon; 15 grandchildren; sister Barbara “Susie” (Owen) Cory of Avon; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Elizabeth Alten; brothers, Gilbert and Raymond Alten and his dog Brandy.
Memorial Service Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Rd., N. Ridgeville where family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
Rev. Dr. Thomas Joyce will officiate.
