Roger E Anderson's Obituary
Roger E. Anderson age 81, of Elyria, passed away Thursday November 25, 2021 at Metro Health Medical Center, Cleveland.
He was born in Kane, PA and had resided in Elyria the past 43 years after moving from Youngstown.
Roger worked as a Corrections Officer for Grafton Correctional Institution for 17 years, retiring in 2002. He previously was a Roll Turner for US Steel in Lorain and Youngstown.
A US Army Veteran, he served his country from 1960-63 earning the rank of Sergeant, then continued to serve in the Ohio National Guard until 1968..
He was an active member of St. Jude's Catholic Church Elyria, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lecture, and Choir Member. Roger was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7970 in North Ridgeville and Council 774 in Elyria and founding Navigator of 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Fr. Vincent Capodanno Assembly 3019. Roger also was the founding Supervisor of AMVETS Stephen B. Anderson Post 1996 at Grafton Correctional Institute. He enjoyed hunting waterfowl, deer and fishing and was a longtime member of LaGrange Hunt Club. Roger had a passion for reading, especially Civil War history books.
Roger is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Eleanor (nee Rubenstahl), two daughters, Christine M. Anderson of Elyria and Cynthia (Thomas) R. Smotzer of Boardman, son, Brian (Kathy) G. Anderson of Elyria, granddaughter, Madeline Smotzer; two grandsons, Zachary and Jacob Smotzer, sister-in-law Linne Marie Anderson of Mercer, PA and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by father, Carl "Eddie" E.J. Anderson and mother, Ruby Pearl Anderson (nee Colgan) sister, Karen J. Fahs, brother, Dennis C. Anderson and niece Valerie Hoover.
The family will receive friends Tuesday November Nov. 30, 2021 from 5-8 PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home 36625 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville, where the Knights of Columbus will lead a rosary at 7 PM. Closing prayer service will take place 9:30 AM Wednesday at the funeral home followed by 10 AM Mass at St. Jude Catholic Church, Elyria. Rev. Richard Gonser will be the celebrant. Private burial will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.
