Robert "Bob" R. Childers' Obituary
Robert R. Childers, 88, of Avon Lake, Ohio, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy rooted in devotion, strength, and unwavering love.
Born on June 3, 1937, in Metropolis, Illinois, to Harley and Helen (Cooper) Childers. Robert lived a life defined not only by hard work and service, but by the deep care he showed to those closest to him. He built a home filled with love, laughter, and steady guidance, becoming the foundation his family could always rely on.
Robert retired from Ford Motor Company as a union official, including chairman for Cleveland Engine Plant #2, after many dedicated years, carrying with him the same integrity and commitment that he brought into every part of his life. While he took pride in his work, his greatest pride and joy was always his family. Whether sharing stories, offering quiet wisdom, or simply being present, he made each member of his family feel supported and deeply loved.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially golfing and bowling, often enjoying those moments alongside friends and loved ones. A man of strong faith, Robert attended Cathedral of Life, where his belief guided his life and relationships.
Robert’s commitment to service extended far beyond his home. He was deeply involved in Freemasonry and numerous affiliated organizations, achieving the distinguished honor of a 33rd Degree Mason. His many roles, including District Deputy Grand High Priest and Grand Chaplain of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, reflected not only his leadership, but his sincere desire to serve others with humility and compassion. He was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel.
Above all, Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandad, and great-grandad. He is survived by his beloved wife, Meldia Childers, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He leaves behind his daughters, Denise Childers Soldo (Jeff Soldo) and Kim Hass (Jeff Hass), who will forever carry his strength and values in their hearts.
He was a proud and loving grandad to Brandon Straubhaar (Kelsey Straubhaar), Stephanie Nath (Luke Nath), and Breanna Straubhaar, and a cherished great-grandad Chili Bear to Lorelai, Selah, Noah, Wyatt, Eleanor, and Laine. Nothing brought him greater joy than seeing his family grow, and his legacy lives on in each of them.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harley Childers and Helen Maye; his sister, Joanne; his brother, Argus; and his niece, Melanie.
Those who knew Robert will remember his quiet strength, his kind heart, and the steady, reassuring presence he brought into every room. But most of all, he will be remembered for the love he gave so freely, love that will continue to guide and comfort his family for generations to come.
Calling hours will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 2pm at Cathedral of Life, 5375 Jaycox Rd., North Ridgeville, Ohio 44039. Pastor Mike Payne will officiate.
“The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.”
