Patty Kay Schafer's Obituary
Patty Kay Schafer (nee Placer), age 74, of Elyria, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Ames Family Hospice in Westlake, after a lengthy illness.
She was born on January 1, 1944 in Sistersville, West Virginia and has been a resident of Elyria for the past 22 years, moving from Brunswick. She worked at 1st Merit Bank as the Head Bank Teller, retiring in 1994. She attended the Christ Church in Elyria, and was a member of the Rowdy Ruby Red Hats, the Laureate Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Elyria, where she was the 2017 Girl of the Year and 2018 Sweetheart of the Year, a Life Member of the Sistersville V.F.W. Post 26175, and the Sistersville Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Patty enjoyed shopping, going on road trips and traveling, taking many cruises, including Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean. She was also fond of playing Bingo and going on gambling trips to area casinos with her family as well as Las Vegas. She was well known for the “Christmas Village” her house became every year during the season (and beyond!) Among all these things, nothing made her happier than spending time with her four grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Butch; son Scott Schafer of Houston; daughter Gina Schafer of Elyria; grandchildren Brandt Best, Logan Schafer, Katelyn Best and Olivia Schafer; sister Nancy (Tommy) DuBroy of Elyria; nieces Tonya (Shawn Napanowicz) Herne, Roxanne Durante, Kelly Jo (Mike) Knight, Holly DuBroy and Samantha (Greg) Hamilton.
Patty was preceded in death by her parents James and Maybell (nee Hubacher) Placer; sister Linda Herne; niece Kim Pursel.
Family will receive friends in the Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Rd., N. Ridgeville, on Tuesday from 12:00-3:00 pm, where services by the Red Hats Society and Beta Sigma Phi will begin at 3:00 p.m. Funeral Services will immediately follow and be co-officiated by Rev. Gene Collings and Rev. Dominic Verdell. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Patty’s name to the Ames Family Hospice, 30080 Hospice Way, Westlake, OH 44145.
