Lois A. Smith's Obituary
Lois Ann Smith (nee Miller), age 90, passed away on Monday September 19, 2022, at the Avenue at North Ridgeville, where she was a resident the past two years.
Lois was born in Cleveland, OH and raised in Columbia Station, OH. She graduated from Columbia High School at the top of her class in 1950. She continued her education at Kent State University, graduating in 1954 with honors and a Bachelor of Arts in English. She relished her time at Kent. It fostered her love of literature, theatre, and politics. She was active in many campus organizations, becoming the president of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. One of her favorite memories was the opportunity to meet Eleanor Roosevelt who was visiting Kent at the time. Lois met the love of her life, Richard C. Smith, at Kent. They married in 1954.
Lois taught for one year in the Berea City Schools. She returned to Columbia Station and had her nine children, all born within eleven years. She raised her family with love and laughter. Her method of discipline was to raise her eyebrow, not her voice. Lois taught English for 13 years at Columbia Local Schools, retiring in 1992.
Lois was an enthusiastic fan of Cleveland sports. The soundtrack of her life was the Cleveland Indians baseball games, always on in the background. She was a fan of the Indians from her childhood, when she would attend games with her father, until her death. She once met her favorite player, Bob Feller. She was an avid reader, from Shakespeare to mysteries, a theatre lover, and a huge Jeopardy fan. She and Richard traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, and Central America. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and beloved sisters.
Lois was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Columbia Station.
Survivors include her sons, Kevin (Carol) Smith of Peninsula, Jeffrey (Anne) Smith of Sagamore Hills, Matthew (Rosemary) Smith of Columbia Station, David (Sara) Smith of Valley City, daughters, Julie (Douglas) Karasek of Strongsville, Suzanne (Tim) Cookson of Strasburg, Sally (Patrick Dowling) Smith of Oxford, Margaret (Bryant) Bay of Middleburg Heights, 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and brother Jack (Florence) Miller of Columbia Station.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Richard, son Timothy Christopher Smith, granddaughter Amy Stacks, parents William and Ann (nee Valade) Miller, brothers Richard and Tom Miller, sisters Jean Scrivens and Marilyn Falk.
Friends and family may call Friday, October 28 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, OH.
A funeral Mass for will be held Saturday, October 29 at 10:00 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 25801 Royalton Road, Columbia Station, OH. Please meet at church.
Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park, OH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in her memory to Murray Ridge Center , 1091 Infirmary Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
