About a year after my brother left for the Army, I was awakened by his voice? I thought at first I was dreaming. But it had to be his voice.
I snuck out of the room, and there, sitting in the kitchen at the dining room table, was this wonder!
He didn't look like him anymore. To me he had always been a protective giant.
I stood shyly at the door. I was confused because I didn't know why he was there, or more importantly, why no one had gotten me up!
He saw me out of the corner of his eye and at first he frowned a little. Then he smiled and opened his arms and away I flew! He had brought me a small TWA zippered like handbag sized bag full of candy. I sat and listened as my mother berated him for not letting her know that he was coming. I watched as she made him a platter, yes a Platter full of cheeseburgers, which he and his best friends proceeded to inhale.
He was only going to be there for a few hours he said. He was on his way to get a flight overseas.
The mood got very dark. I didn't understand. I thought it was cool that he was going out of the country! I'd never been out of Ohio!
He wasn't there for long. And he hugged me hard before he took me into my room and put me to bed. He smiled at the poster. He kissed my forehead and he was gone.
When I woke up the next morning, at first, I thought I had dreamed it, then I saw the bag of candy.
