John W. Schroth's Obituary
John Will Schroth, age 53, Superintendent of Oberlin City Schools passed away peacefully at his home Thursday April 23, 2015.
Born in Norfolk, VA, he was raised in Columbia Township where he lived most of his life until moving to Oberlin in 2013.
John graduated in 1980 from Columbia High School, where he met his Sweetheart, Rebecca whom he later married on sweetest day in 1984. He went on to further his education receiving his Master of Art in Instructional Technology from Kent State University and a Master of Education and Superintendent Licensure from Ashland University.
Mr. Schroth has served with Oberlin City Schools since 2007, first as Director of Operations/Assistant Superintendent and then as Superintendent since 2011.
He had previously taught with Chagrin Falls Village Schools where he had been named Teacher of the year in 1994-95, he went on to serve as Director of Technology for Strongsville City Schools. He was also President of Spencer Management, Inc. in Maple Heights from 1988-2002.
John enjoyed being with his family, fishing and boating, camping in Pennsylvania, and working on his vintage cars.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Rebecca (nee Miller), daughter, Hanna (fiancée Thomas Horvath Jr.) of Rocky River, sons, Spencer, Christopher and Cameron all at home, parents, Edward and Joyce Schroth of Columbia Township, brothers, Edward (Tammy) Schroth of Olmsted Falls, Lawrence (Margaret) Schroth of Palatine, Illinois, two nieces and one nephew.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home 36625 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville. Funeral Service will take place 7:00 PM Monday at The First Church in Oberlin, United Church of Christ, 106 North Main Street. Rev. David Hill, Pastor will officiate. Private burial will take place in Columbia Cemetery, West River Road, Columbia Township.
