Isom Elrod's Obituary
Isom Elrod, age 84, of N. Ridgeville, passed away Wednesday September 23, 2009 at St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake, following a long illness.
He was born in Orgas, West Virginia on May 1, 1925 and had been a resident of N. Ridgeville for the past 57 years. He previously lived in Wakeman and Charleston, West Virginia.
Isom was a US Marine Veteran of World War II. He served throughout the South Pacific (1943-1946) and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He worked as a supervisor of traffic and logistics for NASA for 14 years, retiring in 1980. He previously worked for Fruehauf Trailer Manufacturing in Lorain, and was Chairman of the UAW AFL union.
Isom loved flying, traveling, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, North Ridgeville, a life member of VFW Post 9871, North Ridgeville and was active with the North Ridgeville Senior Center.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Violet (nee Sawyer); sons, Jack (Betty) of Miramar, Florida, John (Elke) of Athens, Georgia; daughter, Debra Thomas of Elyria; grandchildren, Samantha (Tony) Zappavigna, Jason, Cody and Zachary Thomas, Kayla and Heidi Elrod one great-granddaughter, Hannah Zappavigna; sisters, Monna Powell of Knoxville, Tennessee, Elva Hallett of Lincoln, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by parents, Isom and Cordi Elrod; brothers, Bobby and Claude Elrod; sisters, Nancy Stonestreet and Delores Anderson.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-5PM at the David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, N. Ridgeville. Services will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Rev. John Fairweather, Pastor will officiate.
Burial will follow in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, where VFW Post 9871 will conduct full military honors..
