George Edward Smith's Obituary
George E. Smith, age 76, of North Ridgeville, passed away Sunday December 3, 2017 at O’Neill Heath Center, North Ridgeville after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Elyria. George attended Elyria Catholic his freshman year then went on to finish his high school education at Riverside Military Academy in Georgia. He proudly served 22 ½ years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1982. He then started his 2nd career with the National Weather Service in Cleveland where he worked for another 20 years, then retiring in 2002. He was a member of the National Association of Retired and Active Federal Employees Legislative Chair, Lorain County Chapter 1592. He also served as North Ridgeville Clerk of Council for 7 years retiring this past year.
His passion however was working with people in the community through the Republican Club, International Ship Master Association, the Lions Club of North Ridgeville, where was a Past President and served as Treasurer for many years. George was a recipient of the Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellowship award for his outstanding service to his community. He was very active with and served as President of the Stone Creek Home Owners Association. He was a member of the VFW Post 9871, St. Peter Church, and Knights of Columbus Council 7970.
George was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers Fan, enjoyed Hunting, Fishing and Target Shooting with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol (nee Berchak), sons Doug (Karleen) Smith of Strongsville, Scott (Marianne) Smith of Manasses, VA, daughter Kimberly Smith of Middleburg Heights. 4 Grandchildren Kristen, Casey, Miranda, and Rachael, sister Kate (Mike) Evans of Portugal. nephews Duncan and Nathaniel (Sunny) Taylor of Portland, Oregon.
He is Preceded in death by his mother Catherine (nee Noonan), father Leslie Smith, and grandson Nathan Smith.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home 36625 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville, where a prayer service will be held 10 AM Wednesday followed by 10:30 AM Mass at St. Peter Church. Rev. Andrew Hoover will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. The US Air Force and the VFW Post 9871 will conduct full military honors at the graveside.
