Gene Newman's Obituary
Gene R. Newman, age 69, passed away suddenly on Friday, September 9, 2011 at EMH Elyria Medical Center.
Gene was born in Republic, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1942, and has lived in Grafton for the past 38 years, moving from North Ridgeville. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1962-1966. After graduating from the Ohio State Patrol Academy in Columbus, Ohio, Gene became a Patrolman for the North Ridgeville Police Department, a pioneer of the Community Policing Officer Program, and worked in the Detective Bureau as a Juvenile Detective before retiring in 1998 after 25 years of service. He also acted as a court security officer for the U.S. Marshall Service in Cleveland and drove a bus for Greyhound for many years. He was a longtime member of the F.O.P., the American Legion, and attended the Church of the Open Door in Elyria. Gene was a classic car enthusiast, and greatly enjoyed driving his Corvette. He spent many hours watching baseball, was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed listening to Elvis. What Gene enjoyed most was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce (nee Baumgartner); sons, Jim Newman of Grafton and Adam (Melissa) Newman of California; daughters, Jeannine (Wayne) Ramsey of Wellington and Rhonda Newman of Elyria; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister Joyce Hirshfield of Eastlake.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Sarah (nee Malone) Newman, his adoptive grandmother Ella Newman and brother Charles Newman.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, where family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until time of service. The Reverend Tim Fowler will officiate. Interment will be private.
The family requests donations be made in Gene's name to the Open Door Christian School, 8287 West Ridge Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
