Debra Ann Chokan's Obituary
Debra Ann Chokan (Baranowski), age 66, of Elyria, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Deb was born on August 14, 1958 in Cleveland, spent most of her childhood in North Olmsted where she met her future husband, Eric, through the St. Richard Teen Club and started their lifelong relationship right before Senior Prom. Deb first worked nights as a nurse’s aide while attending cosmetology school during the day. The work as an aide steered her toward nursing which she did for 15 years at Lakewood Hospital working mostly nights while having three daughters along the way. She worked in cardiac rehab as well as an Activities Director and Resident Advocate at the Elyria Wesleyan Village Senior Living Center. She finished her full time career as the Campus Director for the Morningside at Martin’s Run 55+ Active Living Community.
They certainly broke the mold when Deb was born. Anyone who’s ever known her will confirm the special effect she had on every one she met and more so those who really got to know her. Her warm, inviting personality always broke through even the toughest persons she dealt with. At every stage of her life she became an instant friend and source of go to support. Deb loved to entertain and gave the best parties even on short notice. She loved decorating for every holiday, especially Christmas. Deb was a top-notch cook who loved to experiment and push her skills to every one’s delight. She loved sports especially basketball and the Cavs. Cardplaying was another special interest that showcased Deb’s Competitive spirit. She was also an avid reader, a hobby that brought much personal satisfaction.
Her very best came as a wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. Every one loved how special she made them feel and the memories she helped to create for each and every one of them. She became the beloved Mimi when her 4 grandchildren came one by one to give her immense joy and excitement.
She is survived by Eric, her husband of 44 years; her three daughters, Jessica Wooten (Kevin), Allison Christy (Jacob) and Emily Mbah (John); grandchildren, Parker, Brayden, Maxie and Brody; mother, Harriet; sisters, Denise File (Rick) and Leslie Rotsky (Jay) and brother, Joe (Kathy) plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene and sister, Lori Stricker (Donald).
In remembrance of Deb, donations can be made to Breast Cancer Awareness/Research.
A Celebration of Deb’s life will be held for close family and friends at a date to be determined.
