Bernard T. Sweeney's Obituary
Bernard Thomas “Ben” Sweeney, age 78, of North Ridgeville, passed away early Friday
morning, November 15, 2024, at The Woods on French Creek, with his wife, Donna, of 51 years,
and their two Huskies, Yukon and Kodiak, at his bedside.
He was born in New York City on August 4,1946, to Bernard T. Sweeney Sr. and Mary
Kenneally Sweeney, whose parents had immigrated from Ireland. Ben grew up in New Jersey,
attending Catholic Schools and graduated from college with a degree in Accounting before
entering the U.S. Army, where he served as an Infantry Lieutenant in Vietnam.
Returning home, he met the love of his life, Donna, whose family had moved into the house
across the street from his family’s home. He began working for Esquire in New York City and
then with Premier Industrial Company in Cleveland for 17 years. Both Ben and Donna, took
the opportunity to work and live in London, England for three years. When the couple returned
to Ohio, they settled in North Ridgeville.
Ben became a small business owner and consultant for the next 25 years. For 10 of those
years, he was President of the Alternative Board of Cleveland, a small business directors’ group.
Ben retired as the General Manager of PLIDCO (The Pipeline Development Corporation,
Strongsville) in 2010.
Ben was a Board Member of the Foundation of the Lorain County Library System and active in
Mills Creek East Homeowners Association for 25 years. He graduated from St. Peter’s College
in Jersey City, New Jersey and earned his master’s degree from Baldwin Wallace University,
Berea, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, and siblings Cathy Sweeney of Monmouth Beach, New
Jersey, Jane (Andre) of Lambertville, New Jersey, Neal (Mary)of Savannah, Georgia and Martin
(Lisa) of New York City. He is predeceased by his sister Mary.
The family will celebrate his life privately.
