Adamae Jean Turman's Obituary
Adamae Jean Turman (nee Newman), 100, of Sheffield Village passed away Thursday, May 1st, 2025. Her final moments were spent surrounded by loving family members sharing warm memories.
Ada was born on Mother’s Day, May 11th, 1924 in Sandusky, Ohio. Her family eventually relocated to 21st Street in Lorain. It was there that she met her next-door neighbor, Bob Turman, who became her closest friend and confidante. That friendship continued and blossomed through a chest of love letters during the war. Ada graduated from Lorain High School class of 1942 B, and obtained a job with the Ohio Gas Company, as secretary and stenographer. In the early spring of 1944 Ada took a courageous step and caught the train out of Cleveland for Miami to elope with Bob, who was a first-class Quartermaster in the Navy. Following the war, Bob and Ada raised their family of 5 children in Avon, Ohio. It was there that Ada spent the next 60 years.
During the 1970’s, she attended Lorain Community college, obtained her real estate license and Notary, and was employed with Realty 1 and Century 21. She is a lifetime member of the VFW and served as a trustee for the Avon Auxiliary for 3 years.
Over the years, Adamae volunteered at the Senior Center in Avon, participated for “Meals on Wheels” and worked for the Board of Elections in Lorain County. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, solving crossword puzzles, reading biographies, and surfing the internet.
Ada was also an avid golfer, and an active member of the Avon Women’s Golf Association, where she presided as president for one year. Bob and Ada organized many golf outings for Sweetbriar Golf Course, in Avon Lake, Ohio. They also enjoyed many memorable golf weekends throughout their active years with family and friends, especially during the retirement winters in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Adamae was survived by her children Marsha (Kenneth) Bodnar of Sheffield Village, Robert Jr. (Phyllis) Turman of Lexington, William (Liz) Turman of Athens, Richard (Diane) Turman of Sheffield Lake, and Thomas (Diana) Turman of Norwalk; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert Turman Sr.; parents Florence May (nee Cox) Fritz and William Eugene Newman; stepfather Jerome Fritz.
Adamae, fondly known by her family as “Gigi,” will be remembered by the power of her gentleness and the power of her compassion. She was happiest in the glow of her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren and trusted friends. If the legacy of 100 years of a person’s life is measured by the lives they have touched, and how much they were loved, a mighty big piece of Ada will live on forever!
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. until the time of Prayer Service at 12:30PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville. Mass to follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Parish, 35777 Center Ridge Rd, North Ridgeville. A private burial will follow at a future date for close family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on behalf of Adamae Turman to O’Neill Healthcare Hospice.
