William A. “Bill” Williams, a loving husband, cherished brother, and loyal friend, went home to be with his Savior on December 22, 2025, surrounded by love. Bill loved the Lord, southern gospel music, Andy Griffith, classic television, football, UNC Tarheels, Alabama Crimson tide, Golf and of course his dog Sophia! He was known for his kindness, generosity, his smile and wry humor, his passion for all things weather and his deep devotion to his faith. Bill was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of the late Ralph F. Williams Jr. and Sue Carolyn Benge, stepson of Robert Benge. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph F. Williams III. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia, Sophia his service animal whom he dearly loved, his sister, Julie Helms of Indian Trail, North Carolina; and his brothers, Brian, Barry, and Rick (Hillary) Williams. He is also lovingly remembered by his uncle, Julius (Judy) Spears; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. Bill grew up in Locust, North Carolina, and accepted Christ at the age of 13 at Friendship Baptist Church. He was involved in many church activities throughout his teen years and made the decision to go to bible college upon his graduation from West Stanly High School. He attended Bible college in northwest Indiana in 1978 where he made many lifelong friends. Bill decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a meteorologist by joining the United States Navy. He completed boot camp in San Diego, California, and was stationed in Rota, Spain, where he traveled throughout the Mediterranean including France, Italy, Spain, England, and many other ports. He later returned to Glenview Air Station near Chicago to complete meteorology school, then served his final three years at Barbers Point, Hawaii, as a meteorologist. Bill completed ten years of honorable service to the Navy in November 1990. After his military service, Bill worked as a radio meteorologist for WMAQ Radio in Chicago. In 1998, he joined NOAA and moved to Bethel, Alaska, where he served as a meteorologist for 16 years before retiring in 2014. During his final week, Bill reflected on his life, saying, “God has given me a great life. I got to have the career I dreamed of, I traveled the world, I have many lifelong friends and an amazing wife and great doggie. I have had everything I could need or ever want.” Bill passed away peacefully with his wife by his side. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
